How to knock down nests (& what's inside them, anyway?)

Whether you're exploring on foot or gallavanting about on horseback, there's no denying that the countryside of Trosky is one of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's best features - or it would be, if not for the constant and distracting 'nest discovered!' pop-ups. If you're anything like me, you'll spend a few minutes after one appears circling the nearest trees with your nose in the air, wondering what those feathery blighters are hiding.

There's more loot to find than just eggs, so they're definitely worth the effort of knocking down... but how do you bring nests down to earth, anyway? In this guide, we'll prepare you for the reasonably rewarding life of a bird-harasser and share some of the loot we've discovered in those tempting twiggy targets.

How do you knock down nests?

You've got two options:

  1. Crouch and throw a rock by pressing 'G'

Rocks have a bit of an arc when thrown, making this option ideal when you're aiming for nests on low-down branches or in a populated area. The further back you stand, the higher you can aim (and you don't need to worry about running out of ammo as the rocks are, thankfully, unlimited.)

 2. Get your hands on a ranged weapon (e.g a bow or crossbow) and shoot it down

This option is necessary for some of the nests in super tall trees, but it's a personal favourite for the strength and marksmanship EXP you'll passively build while using it. Just keep an eye on your arrow count, and try to save higher-quality arrows for something more worthwhile (like shooting someone in the knee.)

Whichever option you choose, be very careful when dealing with nests that are on hills. If it hits the ground at an angle the nest will start rolling like a disgruntled wheel of cheese in Gloucestershire, and unlike you, nests don't have to deal with stamina mechanics. Similarly, a nest that lands in dense bushes might as well be invisible, so try not to lose track of where they land.

You can get a bow for free quite early in the game. Pay a visit to this 'target on a tree' place of interest in the trees north-west of Troskowitz to find a 'dogwood village bow', some arrows, and a nest to practice your shooting. It's got a golden doppleganger badge inside that doubles your score when playing dice - definitely worth the effort!

What can you find in nests?

I've been wearing the title of '#1 bird hater in Trosky' for a while, knocking down about 100 nests so far, and am happy to report that those nests are FULL of goodies. Some of the loot I've found in Trosky alone includes:

  • Eggs - always in pairs
  • Lockpicks
  • Spectacles
  • Keys for nearby chests
  • Blacksmithing materials
    • Coin sword pommel
    • Eight-sided sword pommel
    • Ordinary sword guard
    • Straight sword guard
  • Custom dice
    • Unbalanced die
    • Wagoner's die
  • Badges
    • Gold doppelganger badge
    • Silver badge of headstart
    • Tin warlord's badge
    • Tin badge of headstart

The loot inside nests isn't random, meaning it's just a matter of time until dataminers pinpoint the ones worth targeting and interactive maps start making notes of their contents. Still, even if you don't knock a nest down, discovering them grants a bit of Survival XP on top of the incremental gains to strength, marksmanship, and vitality you'll get from using a bow.

From XP gains to the riches you get from selling their contents, the benefits quickly add up. With all that in mind, I dub thee readers as 'apprentice bird haters' - go give 'em what for!
